The Evans Scholars
There is probably no finer introduction for a golfer than to be identified as an Evans Scholar. Named for Charles "Chick" Evans, the Evan Scholars are chosen from an elite group of caddies for academic and financial support at colleges of their choice. Evans himself was America's leading amateur golfer during the 1910s and 1920s. Mr. Evans was the first amateur to win the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur in the same year - 1916. He was on Walker Cup teams in '22, '24, and '28. He played in 50 consecutive U.S. Amateurs and all with seven hickory-shafted clubs. He took the money he earned from recording a series of phonograph records on golf practices and invested it in scholarships for needy caddies. Lochmoor Club is proud to be one of the Evans Nominating Clubs which recommends high school caddies for this honor.
Today the Evans program is the largest privately-funded scholarship source in the United States. An historic review revealed that some 10,000 caddies have earned the right to be named Evans Scholars. The Lochmoor Club is proud to have 117 Evans Scholar Alumni, which is the largest number for any private club in Michigan. Lochmoor currently has five Evans Scholars ; two attending the University of Michigan, and three at Michigan State University. In addition, Lochmoor is proposing six candidates on January 10th, 2008, in Grand Rapids at the annual selection meeting.
